QATAR WORLD CUP 2022 – Lionel Messi Lead Argentina Defeat Mexico by 2-0 in Group Stage
Following a gruesome and shocking loss against Saudi Arabia who astonishingly scored 2 goals in the second half of their group stages match, Argentina knew that they were in a world of trouble. They had to secure a win over rivals Mexico by hook or by crook to retain their position in the world cup. Furthermore, his win was even more crucial to gain the respect of other teams in the world cup after a shocking and embarrassing loss at the hands of Saudi Arabia. The Middle Eastern team made history with this achievement. The win over the South American team meant so much that the royal family announced a nationwide holiday the very next day. Moreover, the Saudi prince also announced to gift each player in the team with a brand-new Rolls Royce Phantom for their work.
Messi yet again knew he had to perform for his team and his country. The loss to the rivals would mean the loss of the team as a whole and would also be painted as Messi’s failure to perform for this country yet again. There the pressure on him outweighed that of anyone else in the stadium.
The match was close to even with Argentina claiming more possession. There was not much action to see in the first half of the match with both teams failing to get on the score sheet. Then the second half was underway and the pressure was rising on the South American team. They only had 45 minutes to change the course of the match and their road to the world cup. As it struck 64 minutes, Messi finally stepped up and let off a low and hard-struck shot from outside the box that landed in the nets just before the keeper could get his hands to it. It was a goal and the team’s celebration showcased how important it was to keep the hopes of their world cup alive.
Messi on this occasion portrayed the importance of his mighty left foot to his team and his country. Not only did he keeps the hope of the world cup alive but also this goal meant that he broke a record previously held by the late football legend Diego Maradona.
This goal means so much more to Messi than probably any other magical goal that he has scored in his career because he is aware that it is the last world cup and his last chance to show the world his greatness and his magic.
The goal in itself was very magical to watch. With a magically placed pass from Angel Di Maria, Messi set up the ball and took a hard swing. It flew past all the Mexican defenders and ended up in the net. The goal had a drastic effect on both sides. It gave Argentina the confidence to go for more and a sense of urgency erupted in the Mexican side to level up the game.
After not doing much in the first half, Messi seemed more active and energetic in the second half. Constantly looking for space and making runs more often finally paid off in the end. Just as he scored the goal, the entire attendance at the stadium cheered for their hero and savior.
Argentina scored once again to secure that 2-0 win over rivals Mexico. Although this doesn’t secure their place in the round of 16 for which they still need a win over the polish team however it was a relief nevertheless.
