Big Bash League is being played these days with a number of overseas players adding to the colours, charms, and entertainment of the league. Most of the teams have played 3-4 matches so far. Sydney Thunders have found themselves in a difficult spot as they have won only one match out of their 4 fixtures so far. As a result, they sit at the second spot from the bottom.
Their losses included an embarrassing 124-run loss to Adelaide Strikers when thunders got all out for only 15 runs. Sydney Thunders recorded the lowest ever team score in the history of Competitive T20 cricket. It has been a dreadful season for the Sydney Thunders so far. If Sydney Thunders want to do well this season, they must find a way to get going.
Another disappointing and distressing news came from the Sydney Thunder’s camp earlier today when they terminated the contract of Afghan fast bowler Farooqi. It has been reported that Farooqi’s behavior fell in the category of misconduct. Following that, a formal hearing was held by Cricket Australia’s conduct commissioner.
Initially, the club had received a complaint about Farooqi’s behavior. The matter was referred to Cricket Australia’s integrity unit, which conducted an investigation. A ruling was passed, which led to the termination of Farooqi’s contract.
The details of the incident have been kept confidential. Thunders and Cricket Australia have refused to reveal any details about the incident. Sydney Thunders found his behavior ‘sitting outside of their values’ and thus, chose to terminate his contract with immediate effect.
FazalHaq Farooqi was signed by Sydney Thunders as a replacement for the English fast bowler Dawid Willey. His performances in the BBL were impressive but the campaign has been cut short now. Thunder may announce a replacement player in the coming days.
Fazalhaq made his first-class debut for Amo Region in the 2017–18 Ahmad Shah Abdali 4-day Tournament on 13 November 2017. He made his List A debut for Amo Region in the 2018 Ghazi Amanullah Khan Regional One Day Tournament on 10 July 2018.
In July 2021, Fazalhaq was named in Afghanistan’s One Day International (ODI) squad for their series against Pakistan. In January 2022, he was named in Afghanistan’s ODI squad for their series against the Netherlands in Qatar. He made his ODI debut on 25 January 2022, for Afghanistan against the Netherlands.
In February 2022, he was bought by the Sunrisers Hyderabad in the auction for the 2022 Indian Premier League tournament. In July 2022, he was signed by the Colombo Stars for the third edition of the Lanka Premier League. In December 2022, the Sydney Thunder terminated his contract following an investigation by Cricket Australia into a behavioral incident involving Fazalhaq.
Farooqi is a 22-year-old fast bowler from Afghanistan. The left arm fast bowler is a promising young quick and has performed well for Afghanistan Cricket Team at the international level. It is a disappointing news for Afghanistan Cricket Team as their fast bowler has been suspended for his misconduct.
Farooqi has so far played 10 ODI matches for Afghanistan. In those 10 matches for Afghanistan, Farooqi has picked up 17 wickets at an average of 23.70, with best bowling figures of 4/49.
In his 17 T20I matches for Afghanistan, Farooqi has picked up 21 wickets with a bowling average of 20.52 and economy rate of 6.76.
FazalHaq Farooqi was signed by the IPL team Sunrisers Hyderabad. He played few games in the IPL and impressed with his pace and strength. Farooqi was also picked up by Islamabad United for PSL 2023. However, the contract termination by Sydney Thunders may affect Farooqi’s contracts in the IPL and the PSL.
