FIFA World Cup is the biggest stage to perform, and when someone performs there, he indeed raises his market value and comes into the radar of many clubs. FIFA World Cup 2022, around ten days ago, where many players performed and became the targets of many top European clubs.
However, Cody Gakpo’s case is different. He was on the radar of a few top European clubs like Manchester United, Chelsea, and Liverpool but still somehow relevant as his market value rose in the World Cup, where he was the standout performer for his nation.
He is also the key player in helping his country to qualify to the last eight by scoring three goals in five games where they were eliminated by eventual champions Argentina on penalty-shootout.
Due to his brilliant performances in the mega event, his market value rose multiple times after the conclusion of the World Cup. Yesterday, L.F.C finally beat Manchester United to sign the Dutch Wonder-kid who had been behind Gakpo for the last six months. L.F.C developed their interest late but was able to finalise the detail yesterday.
Yesterday, PSV Eindhoven announced the reached agreement with Liverpool for Cody G. worth £37,000,000 on the club’s official website:
“PSV and L.F.C have agreed on the upcoming transfer of Cody G. The 23-year-old attacker will immediately leave for England, where he will undergo the necessary formalities to complete the transfer.”
Credible transfer news reporter Fabrizio Romano reported the transfer fee of 42 million fixed and another 14 million in variables which makes Cody the most expensive transfer in Philips Sport Vereniging Eindhoven history after Lozano, who Italian giants signed Napoli in 2019 for 45 million euros.
According to the official statement, Gakpo will travel to England today for his medicals.
He was the top target for Leeds and Southampton in the summer window, but they could not get their hands on him. When Manchester United appointed Erik Ten Hag, he convinced Management to go for Gakpo, but it was too late.
A significant reason why Liverpool went all in for Cody is due to his offensive capabilities, which he showed at the mega event. With all of their previous four attacking signings (Carvalho, Diaz, Nunez, Jota) on the sidelines due to different injuries, we can see him making his impact from the start of next month.
Another significant factor behind rejecting Manchester United and preferring Liverpool was his international captain Virgil Can Dijk who undoubtedly played a crucial role in convincing his young teammate to join him on the club level.
He heaped praise on young talent during the recently concluded World Cup by saying:
“Hopefully, Cody can go to the moon and back. He is an outstanding player and a good boy too. What we see in training is what you see on the pitch. There is still so much potential, and I hope he can carry on showing it to us. We are delighted with him.”
23-year-old Cody will leave Philips Sport Vereniging in January transfer after helping his side in the first half of the season. He scored 13 goals, and nine assists in Eredivisie and three goals and two assists in five Europa League matches this season.
