West Indies vs Australia 1st Test: 568/3 – Yet to bat (AUS chose to bat)
West Indies are in Australia for two test match series. There has been a lot of talk about how times have changed in recent years. At one-point, West Indies used to be a regular feature of Australian Test Summer. But now it has become a rarity as the team is no longer as competitive and aggressive as it once used to be.
The first test match of the two-test series started on Wednesday, 30th November, 2022.
Australia fielded their full-strength test side as they want to win both these test matches and strengthen their position on the World Test Championship table. They fielded 5 batsmen, three quicks, one allrounder, one spinner, and one wicket-keeper batter.
David Warner, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Steven Smith, Travis Head, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Pat Cummins(c), Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood.
On the other hand, West Indies also named their full-strength test team with the same combination of 5 batters, 1 keeper, 1 fast bowling allrounder, 3 quicks and one off-spinner, who can bat.
Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Nkrumah Bonner, Jermaine Blackwood, Kyle Mayers, Jason Holder, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Roston Chase, Alzarri Joseph, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales
The highlight about West Indies was that they handed a debut to Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who is the son of the former westindian batting great Shivnarine Chanderpaul. The classy left-handed batsman has some big shoes to fill in.
Australia had won the toss on the fast and pacy wicket of Perth and chosen to bat first. It was expected to be an interesting fight between the Australia’s top order and West Indies’ fast bowlers. The West Indian bowlers made good use of the bounce in the wicket and kept Australian batsmen in check.
Jayden Seales had drawn the first blood as David Warner chopped one back onto his stumps for 5 runs only. After losing the first wicket for a team total of 9, Usman Khwaja and Marnus Labuschagne built the innings and stabilized it. At lunch, Australia was 72/1 in 29 overs.
Batting became a lot easier in the post lunch sessions as the Australians were cruising at one point. Both Labuschagne and Khawaja got to fifties as the 100-run partnership was brough up between the two. Australia got to their 150 in the 51st over. Shortly after that, Usman Khwaja was dismissed as he edged one to the keeper. Kyle Mayers was the bowler who dismissed him.
Steve Smith joined Marnus Labuschagne in the middle and the two had put on an unbeaten 142 runs together. Smith was not out on 59 while Labuschagne scored another test 100. He was not out for 154 runs at the end of play. Australia will resume their innings from 293/2 on Thursday morning.
