As it happened| India vs Sri Lanka 3rd ODI 2023 | Sri Lanka’s Tour of India:
The third ODI match between India and Sri Lanka started with a bang as Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill attacked the Sri Lankan bowlers straightaway. The two openers started with a positive intent and added 90 odd-runs in the first 15 overs.
The platform was well-set for the batters to launch in the next 35 overs and take India to a respectable total in excess of 350 runs.
In the 16th over of the match, Rohit Sharma ended up hitting one straight to the fielder in the deep as India lost the first wicket for 95. Rohit Sharma scored only 42 runs as Virat Kohli walked out to bat for India.
It was a dream day for Kohli as he middled everything that came his bat on his way to one of his most dominant innings in his cricketing career. He started well by racing to 29 runs in 22 balls. Shubman Gill continued to score briskly at the other end as the two set batters stitched a partnership of 121 runs.
India had brought up their 150 runs in 23.1 overs. Kohli raced to his half century in only 48 balls. At the very next ball, Shubman Gill picked up a single to score his second century in One Day International Cricket. This was Gill’s first ever hundred at the home soil.
Gill tried to accelerate after completing his hundred but missed a straight ball from Rajitha and got out for 116. The wicket brought Shreyas Iyer to the crease. However, it was difficult for the new batter to get any momentum going. Thus, Virat Kohli took the charge of the game from thereon.
Kohli smashed the bowlers to all parts of the ground to bring up his 46th ODI hundred in only 85 balls. He did not stop there. He continued batting brilliantly and scored at a strike rate of 264 after completing his hundred. He finished with 166 runs in only 110 balls at a strike rate of more than 150. His innings included 13 boundaries and 8 sixes.
India finished their innings at 390/5 in their 50 overs.
Sri Lanka’s chase was rocked by Mohamad Siraj:
Mohammad Siraj grabbed the Sri Lankan batters by their throat and derailed their innings to hand India a 317-run victory. Siraj dismissed the opener Avishka Fernando for 1. He further picked up another three wickets in the powerplay to reduce Sri Lanka to 37/5. Another run-out by Siraj further reduced them to 39/6. Eventually, Sri Lanka got all out for 73 runs.
