Delhi Capitals vs UP Warriors | Women’s Premier League 2023 – In what was an exhilarating fifth match of the Women’s Premier League, Delhi Capitals Women (DC-W) managed to overpower the UP Warriors Women (UPW-W) by 42 runs at the DY Patil Stadium on March 07, 2023. The victory took DC-W to the top of the points table, alongside Mumbai Indians, as they claimed their second win in as many games.
Winning the toss and electing to bat first, DC-W posted an imposing total of 211/4 in their 20 overs, thanks to some outstanding contributions from their top order batters.
Meg Lanning, who has been in top form throughout the tournament, continued her run-scoring spree as she notched up her second successive half-century. Her fifty-run opening stand with the young sensation Shafali Verma set the tone for DC-W’s innings.
However, the star of the show was undoubtedly Jess Jonassen, who smashed an unbeaten 42 off just 20 balls to power DC-W to their second successive 200-plus score in the WPL.
Jonassen, who is more renowned for her left-arm spin, is a more than handy batswoman in her own right. Playing in a power-packed batting line-up like Australia, her batting skills are seldom needed, but for DC-W, her contributions with the bat have proved invaluable.
With less than six overs left in the innings, Jonassen found herself in the middle with a well-set Jemimah Rodrigues for company. Jonassen’s first boundary came via an inside edge off Deepti Sharma’s off spin.
She then played the field when she made room and lofted left-arm seamer Anjali Sarvani over extra cover to target the shorter off-side boundary. She powered Sophie Ecclestone past mid-on before giving her Australian team-mate Tahlia McGrath some special treatment.
A length ball was lofted over long-on before Jonassen smacked McGrath over wide mid-off. Rodrigues then hit back-to-back fours to finish the 19th over that went for 19 runs. Jonassen also slog swept Deepti far over deep midwicket to bring up Capitals’ 200.
In the second innings, UPW-W got off to a fast start, with Alyssa Healy taking the attack to the DC-W bowlers. However, Marizanne Kapp and Shikha Pandey bore the brunt of Healy’s fire, which prompted DC-W captain Meg Lanning to bring on Jess Jonassen in the fourth over.
Jonassen’s first ball was on the pads, and Healy dispatched it to the deep square leg boundary. She then tossed it up wider outside off a couple of balls later, enticing Healy to come down the track and go over the top and had her slicing to backward point. Healy’s innings was cut short for 24 off 17, and Capitals had won half the battle.
Two balls later, Jonassen also had hard-hitting batter Kiran Navgire, who was the first uncapped player to score a half-century in the WPL, holing out to long-on. Two down inside four overs, Jonassen had successfully managed to put Capitals on course for their second win in as many games.
But Jonassen had done much more than spearhead Capitals’ defence. Her two wickets in her first over, coupled with her unbeaten 42 off just 20 balls, helped her team secure a comprehensive victory. After her initial breakthroughs, Jonassen went for 35 off her last three overs and dismissed Devika Vaidya.
Tahlia McGrath’s unbeaten 90 wasn’t enough to chase down DC-W’s imposing total of 211, and the UPW-W eventually fell short
In conclusion, Delhi Capitals Women’s team put up a dominant performance against UP Warriors Women’s team in the Women’s Premier League match held on March 7, 2023.
Jess Jonassen emerged as the star performer with her unbeaten 42 off just 20 balls and two wickets in her first over, leading her team to a 42-run victory. With this win, Delhi Capitals Women’s team continues to be in the race for the top spot in the league table.
