The India fast bowler, who is yet to recover completely from the back injury, has been confronted with the option of undergoing surgery
Jasprit Bumrah to Miss IPL 2023 Season Due to Surgery – According to sources, Indian fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah will likely miss the IPL 2023 season as he has been given the option to undergo a back surgery.
Bumrah has not fully recovered from a back injury that had kept him out of the T20 World Cup last year, and he may also miss the World Test Championship final if India qualifies, which is scheduled to start on June 7 at The Oval.
The medical staff at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru is treating Bumrah’s case on an urgent basis. Bumrah has been experiencing recurring niggles in his lower back since last August when a stress reaction first surfaced. The staff at NCA suggested the surgery option to Bumrah as a possible solution to his condition.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to make a final decision soon in coordination with the NCA and Bumrah. However, they will also have to consider the fact that the ODI World Cup is scheduled for October-November in India.
Bumrah has been eager to make a comeback since suffering a back injury in August 2022, which had ruled him out of the Asia Cup. He was initially named in India’s T20 World Cup squad on September 12, and to prove his fitness, he even played in the last two T20Is of the Australia series on September 23 and 25.
However, Bumrah did not show up for the first T20I against South Africa in Thiruvananthapuram three days later. It was later revealed that he had been taken for scans which revealed a stress-related injury.
The next day, Bumrah was rushed to NCA, where further scans confirmed the seriousness of the injury, and he was subsequently ruled out of the T20 World Cup.
Bumrah resumed his rehab in November and began to bowl by mid-December. His progress seemed positive when the selectors added him to the white-ball series against Sri Lanka, more than a week after the Indian squad was initially picked.
However, while performing higher workloads during a fitness drill in Mumbai in early January, Bumrah experienced discomfort, and scans revealed a fresh niggle had developed. This eventually ruled him out of the Australia Tests.
The Indian team management and the NCA (National Cricket Academy) are committed to ensuring that Bumrah returns to action only when he is completely fit to perform at his peak, and captain Rohit Sharma has warned against rushing him back too soon.
