New Zealand Beat England by Only One Run to Level the Series 1-1, Stunning Win for the Kiwis: New Zealand has beaten England by one run in a one-run thriller in the second test match of the England tour of New Zealand held in Wellington from February 24 to February 28, 2023.
The match was historic as New Zealand became only the fourth team in history to win a test match after following on, and the second team to win by a one-run margin.
Neil Wagner played a significant role in the victory as he broke England in the fourth innings, taking four wickets and securing the win by taking the final wicket of the match.
The match was held at the Basin Reserve, where free entry was granted on the final day, leading to a healthy crowd who witnessed the historic win. The victory not only preserved New Zealand’s unbeaten record at home since 2016-17, but also made them the first team in seven attempts to thwart Stokes’ team in the fourth innings.
New Zealand, who were swept aside in three consecutive chases during the English summer, took revenge by securing a thrilling victory in front of their home crowd.
England, who had declared their first innings eight down and then made New Zealand follow-on 226 runs behind, were ultimately victims of their own positive intent as they did not look to make the game safe despite sitting on a 1-0 lead.
Four wickets fell during a chaotic first hour on Tuesday, but Joe Root produced an assured response, and it seemed as if the game was slipping away from New Zealand when Wagner was called back into the attack. However, his short-ball assault on Stokes saw the limping player struggle, and when Root also miscued a pull in his next over, the momentum swung back to New Zealand.
Wagner finished with 4 for 62 as New Zealand battled back after a century stand between Root and Ben Stokes to inflict England’s first defeat in seven Tests and ensure a drawn series.
England came into the final day needing 210 runs with nine wickets standing, and given their recent proficiency in such situations, they were viewed as favorites to win. However, they were in trouble at 80 for 5, with Root culpable in the run-out of Harry Brook before he had faced a ball.
The match was a nail-biting one that saw both teams’ fortunes ebb and flow. New Zealand ripped out four wickets early on day five, but Root attacked Michael Bracewell’s off spin on the way to a run-a-ball fifty while Stokes, playing an uncharacteristically defensive hand, gritted his teeth through the probing spell from Matt Henry.
Ben Foakes played unflappably in the company of Jack Leach, who has shown fourth-innings heroics with the bat, to whittle the requirement down to single figures.
Foakes then fell hooking at Tim Southee, and although James Anderson struck Wagner for four to take England to within two runs of victory, he was caught down the leg side, and the match was over.
There was rising tension at Basin Reserve as Wagner took the final wicket of the match to seal New Zealand’s victory, which was deserved after dredging a response with the bat, led by Kane Williamson’s hundred in the third innings, and then finding a way to take ten wickets on a surface that had few fifth-day demons.
In the end, New Zealand was the deserving winner of the second test match of the England tour of New Zealand, and their victory will go down in history as one of the most thrilling victories in test cricket.
England, on the other hand, will rue their missed opportunities and their inability to capitalize on their positive intent. Regardless, the match was a testament to the skill and determination of both teams and was a fitting end to an exciting series.
