England came into the final day needing 210 runs with nine wickets standing, and given their recent proficiency in such situations, they were viewed as favorites to win. However, they were in trouble at 80 for 5, with Root culpable in the run-out of Harry Brook before he had faced a ball.

Foakes then fell hooking at Tim Southee, and although James Anderson struck Wagner for four to take England to within two runs of victory, he was caught down the leg side, and the match was over.
There was rising tension at Basin Reserve as Wagner took the final wicket of the match to seal New Zealand’s victory, which was deserved after dredging a response with the bat, led by Kane Williamson’s hundred in the third innings, and then finding a way to take ten wickets on a surface that had few fifth-day demons.
In the end, New Zealand was the deserving winner of the second test match of the England tour of New Zealand, and their victory will go down in history as one of the most thrilling victories in test cricket.
England, on the other hand, will rue their missed opportunities and their inability to capitalize on their positive intent. Regardless, the match was a testament to the skill and determination of both teams and was a fitting end to an exciting series.
