MI vs DC 2023: Mumbai Indians Beat Delhi Capitals in a Thrilling Contest – On April 11, 2023, in the 16th match of the Indian Premier League, Delhi Capitals (DC) played against Mumbai Indians (MI) at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Delhi. The match turned out to be a nail-biter, with Mumbai Indians managing to win by six wickets with the last ball of the match.
Mumbai Indians won the toss and decided to bowl first. DC started off their innings with David Warner and Shikhar Dhawan, who put up a solid opening partnership of 54 runs in 6 overs.
However, Piyush Chawla then came into the attack and broke the partnership by dismissing Dhawan. Chawla continued to trouble the DC batsmen with his googlies and picked up two more wickets to finish with figures of 3/22 in his four overs. Axar Patel scored a quick-fire 54 off just 29 balls to take DC to a respectable total of 172/10 in their 20 overs.
In reply, Mumbai Indians got off to a flying start with Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock scoring 68 runs in the first six overs. However, de Kock was dismissed by Mukesh Kumar in the 7th over. Suryakumar Yadav, who has been going through a lean patch, failed to make an impact and was dismissed for a golden duck.
Rohit Sharma continued to play his shots and scored a brilliant 65 off 45 balls. However, after Rohit’s dismissal, Mumbai Indians lost three quick wickets and found themselves struggling at 133/4 in the 17th over.
With 40 runs needed off the last four overs, Tilak Varma and Tim David played sensibly to keep the scoreboard ticking. Anrich Nortje, who had earlier bowled a brilliant 18th over, was given the responsibility of bowling the final over with just five runs to defend.
Nortje started off well, conceding just one run off the first two balls. However, he then bowled a wide on the third ball and was hit for a boundary by Varma on the fourth ball. With two runs needed off the last ball, Varma hit the ball towards mid-off and ran for a quick single.
However, David, who was running to the danger end, was almost run out as Warner’s throw missed the stumps. David then dived to make his ground and took Mumbai Indians over the line with a ball to spare.
Despite the loss, DC’s David Warner and Axar Patel were awarded the MVP for their contributions with the bat. Warner scored a quick 51 off just 32 balls, while Axar’s 54 off 29 balls helped DC reach a competitive total.
Rohit Sharma was also in contention for the MVP, but he was pipped to the award by his teammate Piyush Chawla, who picked up three crucial wickets.
The match was a low-scoring thriller and showcased the importance of taking wickets at regular intervals. Mumbai Indians managed to take wickets at crucial moments and kept the DC batsmen in check.
Similarly, DC’s bowlers did well to pick up wickets, but their fielding let them down, with Mukesh Kumar dropping a catch and Suryakumar Yadav missing a catch that resulted in a boundary.
The win was a much-needed one for Mumbai Indians, who had lost their first two matches of the season. With this win, Mumbai Indians moved up to fifth place in the points table, while DC remained at the bottom with four consecutive losses.
The result also meant that Mumbai Indians had a better head-to-head record against DC, having won 15 of the 28 matches played between the two teams.
