In what can only be described as a rollercoaster of emotions, the IPL 2023 final witnessed a clash between ecstasy and agony. The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad was witness to a jubilant celebration on one side, as Ravindra Jadeja of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) smashed the winning runs in a display of top-class fashion. On the other end, it was sheer heartbreak for Mohit Sharma of the Gujarat Titans, who was left in tears after failing to defend 13 runs in the final over. Let’s delve into this gripping moment of the match and unravel the thoughts and emotions behind it.
Speaking to the Indian Express, Mohit Sharma revealed that his plan was crystal clear, having been in similar high-pressure situations countless times before. Just moments before the crucial over, Mohit had showcased his prowess by taking two back-to-back wickets in his previous over, establishing himself as the standout performer among the Gujarat Titans’ bowlers.
Backing his instincts, Mohit said, “My mind was very clear in what I wanted to do. In the nets, I had practiced such situations, and I have been in such scenarios before too. So I said let me bowl all balls yorkers and was backing my instinct.” True to his words, Mohit delivered four consecutive yorkers in his first four deliveries, managing to concede only three runs and create pressure on the CSK batsmen.
However, despite his confidence in executing his plan, Captain Hardik Pandya walked up to Mohit for a brief chat. The captain was keen to know Mohit’s plan of action. Mohit, undeterred, responded, “I will again try to bowl a yorker. People are now saying this and that, but frankly, it has no meaning. I knew what I wanted to do.”
Unfortunately, the discussion seemed to disrupt Mohit’s rhythm, and he erred in his length on the penultimate ball. Instead of a precise yorker, he delivered an undercooked one, which was subsequently smashed over long-on for a six by Ravindra Jadeja.
Despite being hit for a six by Jadeja, Mohit remained undeterred and backed himself to replicate his previous deliveries. He was determined to bowl a perfect yorker at Jadeja’s toes. He stated, “I ran and tried to bowl (a yorker) again. I just wanted to be focused and back myself. The whole IPL, I have done that. The ball landed where it shouldn’t have, and Jadeja got his bat. I tried, I tried my best.”
However, fate had other plans. The final delivery turned out to be a low full toss, completely deviating from Mohit’s intentions. Jadeja capitalized on the opportunity and flicked the ball down fine leg for the winning boundary, shattering the hopes of the Gujarat Titans.
In the aftermath of that heart-wrenching over, Mohit Sharma shared his vulnerable side. He confessed, “I couldn’t sleep. Sochta raha kya alag karta joh match jeet jaate. What if I could have bowled this ball or that ball? It’s not a nice feeling now. Somewhere something is missing, but I’m trying to move on.”
Mohit’s words reflect the immense pressure and self-reflection that follows such a crucial moment in a player’s career. While the defeat may sting, it is important for Mohit and his team to learn from the experience and channel their energy toward future opportunities.
As the IPL 2023 season draws to a close, Mohit Sharma and the Gujarat Titans can take solace in the fact that they made it to the final, showcasing their talent and resilience throughout the tournament. Mohit’s exceptional performance in the final over, apart from the unfortunate outcome, is a testament to his skills as a bowler. The team can draw inspiration from their journey and work on areas that need improvement, using this experience as a stepping stone for future success.
