In a recent development, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has communicated its reservations to the International Cricket Council (ICC) regarding the hosting of World Cup matches in Ahmedabad, India. The Chairman of the PCB Management Committee, Najam Sethi, conveyed to ICC Chairman Greg Barclay and CEO Geoff Allardice that the Pakistan team would prefer not to play their matches in Ahmedabad, except for the final.
The PCB source revealed that Sethi has explicitly stated that Pakistan is reluctant to have its matches scheduled in Ahmedabad, unless it is the knockout stage, such as the final. Instead, Sethi requested the ICC to consider venues like Chennai, Bengaluru, and Kolkata for Pakistan’s matches if the government grants clearance for the national team to travel to India for the tournament scheduled for October and November.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen on scheduling a much-anticipated Pakistan vs. India match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. However, the PCB has expressed reservations about the venue, adding a layer of complexity to the situation. Both teams have a historic rivalry and matches between Pakistan and India are highly anticipated by cricket fans worldwide.
To address the concerns raised by the PCB, ICC Chairman Greg Barclay and CEO Geoff Allardice visited Lahore last week to meet with Najam Sethi. Upon their return, they declared Pakistan a peaceful country for sports and expressed satisfaction with the country’s ability to host the 2025 Champions Trophy. The ICC delegation also hinted at playing a mediating role between the PCB and the BCCI, seeking assurances from Pakistan regarding their participation in the upcoming World Cup, which is scheduled to take place in India later this year.
The current situation arises following India’s refusal to travel to Pakistan for the Asia Cup. Consequently, there is a possibility that Pakistan might also decline to travel to India for the 50-over format mega event. The decision regarding the Asia Cup is expected to be made at the end of this month, adding further suspense to the already tense atmosphere between the two cricketing nations.
The rivalry between the Indian and Pakistani cricket teams is one of the most intense and storied in the history of the sport. Matches between these two cricketing giants have produced numerous memorable moments that have become part of cricketing folklore. From Javed Miandad’s last-ball six in the 1986 Austral-Asia Cup final to Sachin Tendulkar’s scintillating innings in the 2003 World Cup, encounters between India and Pakistan have always been high-stakes affairs filled with excitement and drama.
In recent times, the Indian cricket team has established itself as one of the world’s leading sides. With a strong batting lineup and a formidable bowling attack, the Indian team has achieved significant success in all formats of the game. On the other hand, the Pakistan cricket team has shown signs of resurgence, with a talented group of players making their mark on the international stage. Led by inspirational captain Babar Azam, Pakistan’s young team has displayed immense potential and has the ability to compete with the best teams in the world.
In conclusion, the Pakistan Cricket Board has informed the ICC about its reservations regarding Ahmedabad as a venue for World Cup matches, except for the final. The rivalry between the Indian and Pakistani cricket teams adds an extra layer of excitement to any match between them.
