Rahul’s fitness and availability are likely to improve soon
We should have a better understanding of KL Rahul’s availability by the weekend or early next week. He is set to play in a practice game in Bengaluru, and depending on how that goes, he may even participate in a few matches before a final decision is made regarding his return to international cricket.
Rahul’s fitness is currently not at 100 percent. The National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru has not officially confirmed his clearance to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the national selection committee, despite some reports and indications suggesting otherwise.
However, that doesn’t necessarily mean he won’t be cleared by the time of the selection committee meeting, whether it’s later this week or next. The decision on his return will depend on the assessment of NCA experts regarding how well he manages the demands of batting and wicket-keeping.
Based on the images and videos circulating on social media, it appears that he is more than capable of handling the workload. This sentiment is echoed by those within the NCA, who also remark on his overall good physical condition.
According to sources close to him, Rahul, who underwent thigh surgery in May after a ligament tear during an IPL match, has been able to handle approximately 85 percent of the required workload. This is significant because the remaining 15 percent must be demonstrated in an actual match situation.
Typically, players are not allowed to participate in practice games until they have reached the 85 percent threshold. Additionally, the NCA (National Cricket Academy) policy requires players to take part in a match and return without any issues before giving them full clearance. Whether this rule was followed in Jasprit Bumrah’s case remains a pertinent question, but it should be noted that he poses a different challenge as a bowler.
Now let’s talk about Rahul. Given the recent performances of Indian batters in white-ball cricket, selectors are considering Rahul for the Asia Cup. With nearly 10 years of experience in international cricket, his presence would be valuable in the tournament from August 30th to September 17th and also in the subsequent World Cup in October and November. However, sources indicate that he needs to demonstrate full fitness both as a batsman and a wicket-keeper during a 50-over game before being considered for selection. Additionally, how his body reacts the day after will also play a role in the decision-making process.
Other selection dilemmas
Apart from the decision regarding Rahul, the selectors are confronted with various challenges in other positions as well. The task that awaits Ajit Agarkar & Co is far from simple. Certain players may have to be excluded from the 15-member squad, not because they lack merit, but due to constraints in available spots
The squad composition proposal includes 7 specialist batsmen, 7 specialist bowlers, and one all-rounder, Hardik Pandya. The suggested breakdown for the bowlers is currently 4 fast bowlers and 3 spinners. However, this leaves little room for Shardul Thakur, a talented all-rounder who has consistently performed well to earn his position.
Including Thakur in the lineup would mean sacrificing one of the specialist pacers. This could potentially result in exclusion for Arshdeep Singh, Mukesh Kumar, Prasidh Krishna, or Jaydev Unadkat. However, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, and Jasprit Bumrah are likely to be automatic inclusions among the pacers unless unexpected events occur during the upcoming three-match T20Is in Ireland later this month. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav are almost certain to be included as spinners, while Axar Patel and Yuzvendra Chahal compete for the third spinner’s slot. It will be a tough decision to leave out either of them but may be unavoidable.
The return of Rahul is highly anticipated due to concerns surrounding the team’s batting, aside from Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill. There is a lack of confidence in other batters with Ishan Kishan being a possible exception. Unfortunately, Sanju Samson has not lived up to expectations in the ODIs. Suryakumar Yadav himself has admitted to struggling in the 50-over format despite his dynamism. While there are high hopes for Tilak Varma in international cricket, some believe it may be too early to include him in the ODIs. In summary, Agarkar & Co will have many options when it comes to bowling but fewer choices in the batting department.
KL Rahul’s availability for the Asia Cup will be determined once he participates in a practice match on Sunday or Monday. The National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bangalore has not yet confirmed his fitness for the tournament.
The Indian cricket team’s performance in the West Indies left much to be desired, prompting the team management to express a strong desire for Rahul’s return. They believe that having a reliable No. 4 batsman will provide the crucial stability needed in the middle-order.
Rahul’s future in the Asia Cup will be determined by how he performs in the 50-over practice match and his recovery, according to sources. In June, Rahul underwent surgery for a right thigh injury.
Rahul has been undergoing fitness drills as well as batting and wicketkeeping practice. The medical team at the National Cricket Academy wants to evaluate his performance in a match before approving his selection for the Asia Cup squad. India’s first match is scheduled for September 2, against Pakistan.
However, Shreyas Iyer is still working on reaching match fitness. Whether he will be selected for the World Cup will depend on his progress over the next two weeks. The provisional squad for the tournament needs to be announced one month prior to the opening match on October 5th.
Head coach Rahul Dravid is keen on reintroducing Rahul to the team while considering the balance factor. NCA chief VVS Laxman has been personally overseeing Rahul’s progress and wants to avoid any risks by rushing him back into international cricket.
During the previous World Cup in England, India faced difficulties with their No. 4 batting position. They had experimented with different players leading up to the 2019 edition, ultimately choosing Vijay Shankar over Ambati Rayudu due to his versatile skills in batting, bowling, and fielding.
India initially used Rahul at the number four position before switching to Hardik Pandya for a few matches. Shankar then filled the role until Rishabh Pant was assigned to the position. The current team management is considering Rahul as a specialist batter for the Asia Cup, while entrusting Ishan Kishan with the responsibilities of keeping wickets.
