Delhi Capitals’ star player Rishabh Pant is exuding confidence about his readiness to grace the entirety of IPL 2024. However, uncertainties linger as to whether he will helm the team as captain or don the gloves behind the stumps, considering his ongoing recovery from a severe car accident.
Pant’s cricketing turmoil traces back to December 2022 when a harrowing car accident left him contemplating mortality. The young dynamo confessed feeling as though his time in this world had concluded prematurely. Yet, defying the odds, Pant is now on the cusp of a remarkable comeback, buoyed by his unwavering confidence.
Ricky Ponting, the astute mentor of Delhi Capitals, shared insights on Pant’s situation during a recent interaction in Melbourne. Ponting, amidst his new role as Washington Freedom’s MLC coach, revealed Pant’s bullish outlook regarding his participation in the upcoming IPL season. However, the veteran coach maintained a pragmatic stance, acknowledging the unpredictability surrounding Pant’s roles in the tournament.
Ponting elaborated, “Rishabh is very confident that he’s going to be right to play. In what capacity we’re not quite sure yet.” He emphasized the uncertainty surrounding Pant’s involvement in wicketkeeping duties due to the proximity of the tournament’s commencement to Pant’s recovery timeline.
The former Australian captain highlighted the dilemma surrounding Pant’s dual responsibilities of captaincy and wicketkeeping. Ponting, while acknowledging Pant’s assertiveness in wanting to lead from the front, expressed reservations about overburdening the talismanic cricketer.
Ponting stated, “But in saying that, we’re only six weeks away from the first game as well. So, we’re not sure if we’ll get wicketkeeping out of him this year.”
In the event of Pant’s unavailability for leadership duties, Ponting confirmed David Warner as the designated captain. The coach expressed satisfaction with the team’s composition post-auction but conceded that the franchise’s performances in the last two seasons fell short of expectations.
Ponting pinpointed batting as a primary area of concern, particularly at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, the Capitals’ home ground. Reflecting on the team’s disappointing run in IPL 2023, Ponting stressed the necessity of bolstering the batting lineup to tackle the challenges posed by spinning wickets.
Despite the challenges, Ponting expressed optimism about the team’s prospects, citing the infusion of young Indian talent into the squad. He emphasized the significance of nurturing talent in a league where immediate impact is paramount, hinting at the Capitals’ strategic approach towards IPL 2024.
