Sri Lanka’s teenage pace sensation, Matheesha Pathirana, recently opened up about the instrumental role Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and cricketing legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni have played in his ascent to international cricket. Pathirana, often compared to the great Lasith Malinga for his unique slinging action, has rapidly emerged as a key player for both his franchise and national team.
Pathirana first grabbed headlines during the 2022 Under-19 World Cup with his distinctive bowling style and impressive performances. His ability to deliver fast, accurate deliveries with a slinging action drew immediate comparisons to Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga. This caught the eye of Chennai Super Kings, who signed him as a replacement for the injured Adam Milne in the 2022 Indian Premier League (IPL) season.
Despite getting the opportunity to play only two matches in his debut IPL season, Pathirana made a significant impression. These appearances were pivotal as they paved the way for his maiden international call-up for Sri Lanka. Reflecting on this phase, Pathirana expressed his gratitude towards CSK for providing him the platform to showcase his talents and catch the attention of national selectors.
Over the past two IPL seasons, Pathirana has solidified his reputation as a formidable strike bowler for CSK. With 32 wickets in 18 matches, he has become a crucial component of the team’s bowling attack. His ability to bowl at high speeds, often crossing the 150 kmph mark, particularly in the death overs, has made him a valuable asset.
One of the most significant aspects of Pathirana’s journey with CSK has been the opportunity to share the dressing room with MS Dhoni. The young pacer described this experience as a “blessing from heaven,” highlighting the immense value of learning from one of cricket’s greatest minds. Dhoni, renowned for his calm demeanor and strategic acumen, has been an inspirational figure for many young cricketers, and Pathirana is no exception.
“After my under-19s, I was not in any squads in Sri Lanka. But after my debut for CSK, I received such chances and got picked for Sri Lanka’s main team. Playing for CSK is a blessing from heaven for me. Until I played for CSK, not many knew me. Sharing the dressing room with Mahi bhai (MS Dhoni) is quite special for youths like myself, especially coming from Sri Lanka,” Pathirana remarked in an interview with Sportstar.
Pathirana’s success is not solely due to his natural talent and mentorship under Dhoni but also a result of his relentless hard work. Over the past couple of years, he has focused intensively on improving his line and length, which has significantly enhanced his effectiveness as a bowler. His consistent efforts have not only helped him become a regular feature in the CSK lineup but have also established him as a key player for the Sri Lankan national team.
As Pathirana prepares for the crucial white-ball series against India, he recognizes the significance of this challenge. The series is particularly important as it comes against the backdrop of India’s recent triumph as T20 World Champions. Pathirana believes that performing well against such a formidable opponent could serve as a major confidence booster for the Sri Lankan team, especially after their disappointing run in the T20 World Cup.
“I think it will be a nice challenge. India is coming with a new coach and several new players; their combination will be slightly altered. But it would be a fantastic test for us because they are world champions. We have a really good side with a lot of ability and promise. Unfortunately, we didn’t fare well in the T20 World Cup. But if we can win this series, it would be a confidence booster for the following three years,” added Pathirana.
The upcoming series against India will not only test Pathirana’s skills but also his mental fortitude. Playing against a world-class team like India, especially with a new coaching setup and fresh players, will require adaptability and resilience. For Pathirana, it is an opportunity to further cement his place in the international arena and continue his upward trajectory.
Pathirana’s journey from the U-19 World Cup to becoming a key player for CSK and the Sri Lankan national team is a testament to his talent, hard work, and the support he has received from mentors like Dhoni. As he continues to develop his skills and gain experience, there is no doubt that Pathirana has the potential to become one of the leading fast bowlers in world cricket.
In conclusion, Matheesha Pathirana’s story is one of perseverance, dedication, and the significant impact of having the right opportunities and mentors. As he steps into the next phase of his career, the young pacer’s journey will be closely watched by cricket enthusiasts around the world, eager to see him realize his full potential on the global stage.
