Day 3 Highlights: Women’s One-Off Test from Lord’s Delivers Edge-of-Seat Drama

Morning Session: Early Breakthroughs Set the Tone

On Day 3 at Lord’s, rain-affected conditions gave way to a gripping morning session as India resumed at 157 for 3 in their first innings. Spinner Sophie Ecclestone struck twice early, dismissing the in-form Smriti Mandhana (42) and Pooja Vastrakar (5). The England attack, led by Kate Cross, exploited a sticky pitch, leaving India’s top order on the back foot.

Yastika Bhatia, promoted to number five, found solidity in a testing phase. She and wicketkeeper-batter Taniya Bhatia (31) opted for cautious defence and measured strokeplay, adding 50 crucial runs before Taniya was undone by Charlie Dean’s flight. By lunch, India stood at 215 for 5, trailing by a slender 28 runs but with the momentum shifting back and forth.

Middle Session: Yastika Bhatia’s Maiden Test Fifty

Post-lunch, the focus fell on Yastika Bhatia, who calmly notched her maiden Test fifty in just under two hours. Her partnership with all-rounder Sneh Rana (22) added 65 invaluable runs, allowing India to edge ahead. Bhatia’s stroke range covered drives through covers, deft flicks off the pads and a handful of elegant pulls.

Dean broke the stand just before afternoon tea, accounting for Rana with a well-disguised googly. The breakthrough sparked a mini-collapse, with India losing two quick wickets—Amelia Kerr caught behind and Renuka Thakur lbw—leaving the visitors at 300 for 8. Nevertheless, the lead had climbed to 113 runs, offering a psychological edge heading into the final session of the day.

Afternoon Session: Tail Resists but England’s Bowlers Strike

The final session saw India’s tail-enders mount a spirited fight. Ekta Bisht chipped in with an unbeaten 16, supporting Shikha Pandey (9*) through gritty defence. England’s fielders, however, remained alert: Danielle Hazell ran out Poonam Khemrao with a direct hit from mid-on.

India were eventually bowled out for 321, setting England a target of 160. Ecclestone finished with figures of 4 for 72, while Cross ended with 3 for 54. The hosts faced a tricky chase on a pitch that had offered turn and variable bounce, testing their batting depth.

England’s First Glimpse in Second Innings

England began their response under fading light, with openers Tammy Beaumont and Heather Knight taking guard against India’s seam duo. Shikha Pandey struck early, nipping out Beaumont for 12, only for Knight and Sophia Dunkley to steady the ship, moving to 45 for 1 at close.

Captain Harmanpreet Kaur rotated her bowlers intelligently. Anya Shrubsole managed a sharp lbw review to dismiss Dunkley just shy of her half-century. England’s lead partner, Knight (38*), survived a late lbw shout, leaving the final day tantalisingly poised.

What to Expect on Day 4

With England needing 115 and having nine wickets in hand, Day 4 promises high-stakes drama. Spinners from both sides are expected to feature prominently as the wicket continues to wear. India will look to exploit any turn, while England must find solidity at the crease to chase down the target.

For Indian fans, the battle between Mandhana’s flair and Knight’s resilience remains a highlight. Stay tuned for live coverage, in-depth analysis and round-the-clock match excitement as the one-off Test heads to a thrilling conclusion at cricket’s iconic Mecca, Lord’s.
