RCB’s Struggles in IPL 2023 | RCB IPL 2023 Review

Introduction:

The 2023 IPL season witnessed a disappointing performance from the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) as they missed the playoffs for the first time in four seasons. Despite standout performances from key players such as Virat Kohli, Faf du Plessis, Glenn Maxwell, and Mohammed Siraj, the team’s misfiring middle order and lack of consistent bowling support proved to be their downfall. Let’s delve deeper into RCB’s journey and analyze the factors that contributed to their underwhelming campaign.

Season Overview:

RCB finished sixth on the points table with 14 points, slipping below the Rajasthan Royals. They registered seven wins and seven losses throughout the season. Notably, RCB had a better away record, winning four games on the road, compared to their performances at home. However, they faced setbacks when they conceded 200-plus runs in three matches, resulting in crucial losses to the Lucknow Super Giants and the Chennai Super Kings.

The Good – Dominance of Kohli, du Plessis, and Maxwell:

Despite RCB’s overall struggles, there were standout performances from their star players. Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli proved to be the backbone of RCB’s batting lineup, finishing as the top two run-scorers for the team. Du Plessis showcased his brilliance in the powerplay, while Kohli reminded fans of his remarkable 2016 season with back-to-back centuries. Glenn Maxwell’s contributions were equally vital, injecting momentum into the team’s innings and maintaining the tempo at the top order. Collectively, this trio accounted for an impressive 70.70% of the runs scored by RCB throughout the season.

The Bad – Middle Order Woes and Inconsistent Bowling:

One of RCB’s major concerns was their non-existent middle order. In the absence of Rajat Patidar, the team experimented with various batsmen, including Anuj Rawat, Shahbaz Ahmed, Suyash Prabhudessai, Mahipal Lomror, and Kedar Jadhav. Unfortunately, none of them could provide the stability and consistency required, with Rawat finding form only towards the end of the season when it was too late. Dinesh Karthik, an experienced campaigner, had a forgettable season, further exacerbating RCB’s batting woes.

The bowling department also posed challenges for RCB, apart from the exceptional performances of Mohammed Siraj. While Siraj proved to be a threat in the powerplay and emerged as one of the top wicket-takers, other bowlers failed to consistently trouble opposition batsmen.

Harshal Patel’s diminishing returns in the death overs, conceding runs at an alarming rate, put RCB’s bowling resources under immense pressure. Moreover, injuries to key bowlers like Josh Hazlewood, Wanindu Hasaranga, Reece Topley, and David Willey further weakened RCB’s bowling arsenal.

Top Performer – Faf du Plessis:

Amidst RCB’s struggles, Faf du Plessis emerged as a standout performer throughout the season. His consistent performances even led to discussions about a potential comeback in the South African national team for the upcoming 50-over World Cup in India. Du Plessis’ remarkable strike rate of 168.54 in the powerplay was the second best among batters who faced a minimum of 100 balls. With a total of 730 runs in 14 innings, including eight half-centuries, du Plessis showcased his ability to balance consistency and aggressive shot-making.

Highlights and Records:

The partnership between Virat Kohli and Faf du Plessis as openers yielded an astonishing 939 runs, equalling the record set by Kohli and AB de Villiers in 2016. Kohli’s back-to-back centuries surpassed Chris Gayle’s record of six IPL centuries, with Kohli now holding the fourth position for the most T20 hundreds. Though RCB faced challenges as a team, these individual achievements provided moments of pride and resilience.

Conclusion:

In summary, Royal Challengers Bangalore’s 2023 IPL campaign was marred by inconsistencies in their middle order and a lack of consistent bowling support for Mohammed Siraj. While Kohli, du Plessis, Maxwell, and Siraj performed exceptionally well, the team as a whole couldn’t find the right balance to secure a playoff spot. As RCB reflects on their performance, addressing these shortcomings and building a stronger team composition will be crucial for their future endeavors in the IPL.
