IND vs NZ – 3rd ODI called off due to Rainfall

It was another disappointing day in Hamilton as another match of India’s tour of New Zealand 2022 got washed out due to rain. The cricket matches in this year’s summer have been more affected by rainfall as compared to the past years. The recently concluded ICC World T20 had a similar pattern where a number of crucial matches were washed out due to rain. The same thing continued across the border as 3 of the 5 matches so far were affected by rain.

Toss and Conditions:

The conditions were overcast on the morning of the match. New Zealand had won the toss under cloudy skies and chose to field first. The decision was made on the back of an impressive run chase in the first ODI, where Tom Latham and Kane Williamson blunted down India’s first-innings score of 306 as New Zealand chased down the total with 17 balls to spare.

Another crucial factor in the choice of bowling first was the weather. Rainfall was predicted for the day. Teams generally prefer to chase in such conditions as they have a smaller total to chase in the second innings. It just provides more clarity to the chasing side. Moreover, New Zealand were hopeful about extracting early swing under cloud cover.

Teams:

India had made two changes to their side as they brought Deepak Hooda and Deepak Chahar into the side while leaving Sanju Samson and Shardul Thakur out. The decision to retain Rishabh Pant raised a few eyebrows as Sanju Samson was benched again. On the other hand, New Zealand had retained their winning combination. Thus, fielding the same side.

As it happened:

Indian openers had started well under overcast skies. Both Shubman Gull and Shikhar Dhawan were solid in their defence as India motored along to a score of 22 in 4.5 overs without the loss of any wicket. That’s when the first drops of rain halted the progress of the game. The teams walked out and the game remained suspended for about 3 hours.

Rain stopped for a brief period and the game was reduced to 29 overs per side. Shikhar Dhawan fell for 3, right after the rain break. He tried to loft the ball from Matt Henry over mid-on’s hands but ended up looping it to Lockie Ferguson, who gleefully accepted the catch.

That brought the sensational Surya Kumar Yadav to the crease. Shubman Gill kept the momentum going and scored 45 from 42 balls with four fours and one six. SKY took charge as he so often does to take India to 89/1 in 12.5 overs. He made a 25-ball 34 with two fours and three towering sixes.

India had made 67 runs in their 8 overs after the rain break. They looked in a very good position to put on a challenging total for the kiwis and equalize the series, but rain interrupted again, and teams had to walk off the field. Persistent rainfall meant that the game had to be called off.

3rd ODI Match Between IND vs NZ:

IND vs NZ: This means that New Zealand have an unassailable lead in the series. The 3rd ODI match of the series is scheduled on Wednesday 30th November, 2022.
