NZC – Kane Williamson on Martin Guptill: “He has been one of our best white-ball players ever”

The New Zealand captain in a recent statement indicated that their key player martin Guptill is to be missed in upcoming matches. The captain stated that martin had decided not to extend his central contract and had been relieved from participating in international games for New Zealand. This decision was because the 36-year-old opener wants to test his skill and experience in other places like many other international players who took the same route.

The new generation of franchise cricket that has evolved in recent years now means that there is a franchise cricket tournament taking place almost every month of the year. It comes with many financial packages. It is an appealing option for many players. Hence several players from the New Zealand team, including Trent Boult, James Neesham, and Colin de Grandhomme have all given up international duties and gone for this path which has left the New Zealand squad in trouble.

Williamson, in his statement, praised how Martin had played a vital role in white ball cricket and said that the decision is there and there is nothing anyone else can do about it.

Having scored over ten thousand plus runs in white-ball cricket, Martin Guptill has had a massive impact on the team’s test matches and led them to great victories. Now the team has moved on from him and the player has not been seen playing in any of the t 20 world cup matches. Moreover, he dropped when the time came to play against India in a series of matches.

The New Zealand captain Williamson in a statement showered his appreciation on Martin Guptill for what he had done in the past and what he carried on doing. Even though the batsman did not get a proper playing chance, he was great for the environment and gave his offering to the other players. Kane Williamson stated that he will be missed but added on to say that Martin Guptill has not yet completely retired from cricket. Things are working and we have to wait and see what the true picture tells us in the following period. Nevertheless, the batsman is a great loss to the team and now they just have to carry on without him.

There are rumors that Guptill is in talks with a BBL contract with a new BBL season starting in December. His ex-teammate Trent Boult has already signed up with the Melbourne Stars. After that, he will be traveling to UAE and consequently playing for MI Emirates. Moreover, De Grandhomme has taken up retirement which, is soon to be announced after we saw his name among the drafts of the new BBL season finally Jimmy Neesham is only one out of the four that will be starting against India on Friday.

Although the New Zealand cricket team management has stressed that they intend to give playing opportunities to the player that are currently under a contract. Williamson has stated that now they are looking out for an alternative route to look out for the benefit of both sides. They intend to land on a decision that favors both the team and such individuals. Williamson stated that Martin has not retired but, he wishes to look out for other opportunities at the same time, he is a part of the team and, now it is only about balancing these factors.

There were also some questions arising if Williamson wished to continue captaining the New Zealand team in all three formats. The skipper cleared these talks by stating that he wishes to continue as it is for the time being.
