Both India and England now have to play their best XI keeping the opposition and the conditions in mind. India, particularly have not given Yuzvendra Chahal a single game in the tournament so far. He was the primer spinner in form heading into this tournament. The ploy to bench Chchal has baffled many former Indian cricketers. Meanwhile, the ploy to play Dinesh Karthik in four back-to-back games has baffled many as well Many expected him to be benched after he failed to perform in the Pakistan game. 1) Yuzvendra Chahal
Chahal has not been given a game in the tournament so far. Heading into the semi-final against England, the management would not want to break the winning combination by bringing the leggie in. Ravichandran Ashwin and Axar Patel played in every game so far.
They could not pick too many wickets in the middle overs before the game against Zimbabwe. Ashwin picked three while Axar picked one against Zimbabwe. Having been benched throughout the Super 12 stage, Chchal might find himself on the sidelines in the IND vs ENG semi-final as well.
2) Karthik Meiyappan
Karthik scored 1, 6, and 7 in the three matches that he played before he was dropped from the playing XI against Zimbabwe. The management decided to bring Rishabh Pant into the playing XI adding a left-handed option.
With Karthik reportedly not being in BCCI’s plans after the T20 World Cup, Pant is a better option in the XI given that he is young and has looked better with the bat than the right-handed keeper batsman. Having been benched against Zimbabwe, the management might have given a message to Karthik as well.
3) Harshal Patel
Harshal like Chahal has not played yet in the tournament so far. He was picked in a bowling attack that has names like Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Mohammed Shami, and Arshdeep Singh.
Arshdeep’s quality death bowling in this World Cup made the management put their faith in him which meant that Hrashal would always find it difficult to make it to the playing XI. Arshdeep has picked up 10 wickets so far and is rightfully deserved his place in the side.
