Melbourne Cricket Club manages the historic Melbourne Cricket Ground and has expressed a keen interest in hosting a test series between India and Pakistan. MCG is one of the most historic and prestigious cricketing grounds in the world.

The venue has hosted two World Cup finals (1992 and 2015) and also hosted the final of the recently concluded ICC World T20 2022. Every year, a boxing day test match is scheduled at MCG to mark the pinnacle of Cricketing Summer in Australia.

MCG was the biggest cricketing stadium in the world till 2020. Now it is the second biggest cricketing stadium in the world behind India’s Narendra Modi International Cricket stadium. Melbourne Cricket Ground has a seating capacity of 90,000 people.

The historic nature of the venue makes it a perfect choice to host India v Pakistan matches.

MCC wants to host the series because of its symbolic and commercial significance. The move has come after the unbelievable success of the Indian Pakistan game at the same venue in the ICC World T20.

There were more than 90,000 spectators in the ground to watch the match between India and Pakistan at the MCG. This number was greater than the number of fans that showed up for the final of the FIFA World Cup this year.

There were nearly 88,000 fans in that game. Cricket fans from India and Pakistan travelled to Australia to watch that one game. This shows how vastly popular cricket is among Indian and Pakistanis.

MCC chief executive Stuart Fox talked to media about the prospects of an India vs Pakistan series in Australia. His exact words were:

“Three Test Matches in a row would be lovely at the MCG. You’d fill it every time. We have asked,” Fox said. “We’ve taken that up with Cricket Australia. I know the government has as well. Again, it’s complicated from what I can understand, amongst a really busy routine. So, I think that’s probably the bigger challenge.”

“Hopefully, Cricket Australia keep taking it up with the ICC and keep pushing for it. When you do see some of the stadiums around the world unoccupied, I think it would be much better to have a full house and that atmosphere and celebrating the game with full houses.”

India and Pakistan last played a bilateral test series in 2007. So, a test series between the two teams at a neutral venue would be the most precious thing that cricket fans can ask for. MCC and Victorian government have shown their willingness to host the series.

However, the final decision lies with Pakistan Cricket Board and BCCI.
