Round of 16 Recap & Quarter Finals Line-up for Qatar FIFA World Cup 2022: FIFA World Cup 2022 continues to surprise and stun us with unbelievable performances, unexpected results, and highly competitive matches. The round of 16 stage has now come to an end and the top-8 are gearing up for the quarter finals.
Netherlands vs USA:
It was a comfortable 3-1 win for the dutchmen who played wonderfully well in their round of 16 fixture against USA to secure a final-8 berth. It was a comprehensive victory for the dutch.
Argentina vs Australia:
Argentina were the favorites for their round of 16 game against Australia. Lionel Messi came good in the crucial match to give Argentina an early lead, as they went into half-time with a scoreline of 1-0. Alvarez scored the second goal for Argentina in the beginning of the second half to give a decisive 2-0 lead. Australia did put a goal on the scoreboard in the 77th minute. But that was an own-goal by Enzo Fernandez.
The game finished at 2-1 as Argentina joined Netherlands in the quarterfinal fixture.
France vs Poland:
France vs. Poland was another one-sided affair as one goal from Giroud and two from Kylian Mbappe gave France a comfortable 3-1 lead. Lewandowski scored the only goal for Poland, that too, through a penalty.
England vs Senegal:
England were the stronger of the two sides in this round of 16 match and their emphatic performance took them through as they beat Senegal by 3-0. Henderson and Harry Kane scored in the first half while Bukayo Saka hammered the last nail in the coffin with a goal in the 57th minute.
England will take on France in the quarter-finals.
Brazil vs South Korea:
Brazil had started this world cup as the favourites to win the glorious FIFA World Cup trophy. And they showed the world why they are strong contenders for the trophy. A 4-1 win against Korea was all they needed while heading into the quarterfinals. Interestingly, Brazil had scored all their goals in the first half of the match.
Croatia vs Japan:
FIFA World Cup 2022’s round of 16 match between Japan and Croatia was one of the most closely contested matches as Japan took the lead with a goal in the 43rd minute by Daizen Maeda. After trailing for 12 minutes, Croatia found the equalizer to make it 1-1. Both sides failed to score any more goals in the added time and the extra time as the match went to penalties.
Croatia won 3-1 on the penalties.
Croatia vs. Brazil is the quarterfinal matchup.
Morocco vs Spain:
Moroccans are playing at a whole new level. The match between Spain and Morocco was perhaps the best match of the tournament until now. The two teams came very close to scoring during the game but could not convert any of the opportunities. It eventually finished 0-0. But Morocco held their nerves and won 3-0 on penalties.
Portugal vs Switzerland:
A massive, comprehensive, and emphatic 6-1 victory over Switzerland meant that Portugal will play against Morocco in the quarterfinals.
This has been a brilliant world cup so far. Let’s see who makes it to the top-4.
The FIFA World Cup, often simply called the World Cup, is an international association football competition contested by the senior men’s national teams of the members of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA, the International Federation of Association Football), the sport’s global governing body. The tournament has been held every four years since the inaugural tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not held because of the Second World War.
The format involves a qualification phase, which takes place over the preceding three years, to determine which teams qualify for the tournament phase. In the tournament phase, 32 teams compete for the title at venues within the host nation(s) over about a month. The host nation(s) automatically qualify.
