Laxman Responds to Centre of Excellence Criticism
In the wake of a spate of injuries to key Indian players, former batting legend VVS Laxman has come forward to clarify the role of the National Cricket Academy’s Centre of Excellence (CoE). Contrary to claims that it functions merely as a rehabilitation unit, Laxman emphasises its broader mandate in nurturing talent, advancing fitness and safeguarding athlete wellbeing.
Holistic Development Beyond Rehabilitation
The CoE, based in Bengaluru, offers far more than post-injury therapy. Under the guidance of former India fast bowler Chetan Sharma, the facility integrates sports science, physiotherapy, technical coaching and mental conditioning. Laxman points out that while rehab is a vital component, the primary focus remains on preventive care, skill enhancement and data-driven performance analysis.
“Players come here to sharpen their technique, work on strength and agility, and understand injury management strategies,” Laxman said. “It’s about reducing injury risk through tailored training plans, not just treating them when they break down.”
Managing a Gruelling International Calendar
India’s packed schedule—spanning Test tours, white-ball series and the high-octane Indian Premier League—has sparked debate over workload management. Critics have pointed fingers at the CoE, suggesting that better pre-tour conditioning might have averted recent setbacks. Laxman rebuts this by highlighting that central contracts and the board’s rotation policies ultimately dictate playing time.
“The BCCI schedules demanding travel and back-to-back fixtures. The CoE supports players, but it can’t alter the calendar,” he said. “Athletes have autonomy; they choose to rest or play. Our job is to provide scientific support, sports action programmes and recovery protocols.”
Leveraging Technology and Nutrition
One of the CoE’s standout features is its use of biomechanics labs and wearable sensors to monitor workload. Nutritionists curate personalised meal plans, while mental coaches run resilience workshops. This multi-disciplinary approach aims to keep players in peak condition and ready for match excitement on the field.
