BCCI Prioritises Player Rest with Overhaul of Cricket Calendar

Posted on September 5, 2026 by King Kohli 7

BCCI Calls for a Balanced Cricket Calendar

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has initiated a comprehensive review of the international and domestic cricket schedule to ensure players receive adequate rest between series. During a high-level meeting chaired by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, top officials, coaches and senior cricketers discussed ways to ease the current match congestion and safeguard player health. The move comes amid growing concerns over fatigue, injury risks and mental burnout.

Player Workload Under the Lens

India’s cricket stars have been fronting the national side across formats while also featuring in lucrative franchise tournaments. Long tours, biosecure bubbles and back-to-back fixtures have added to the strain. The BCCI review meeting identified several pain points, including tight turnarounds between Tests, One-Day Internationals and Twenty20 matches.

“Our players are our most valuable asset,” explained a senior BCCI official. “We want them at peak fitness and mental readiness for every contest. A balanced calendar will help maintain high performance levels over longer career spans.”

Proposed Adjustments to Future Tours Programme

One of the key outcomes from the meeting is a proposal to recalibrate India’s Future Tours Programme (FTP). BCCI plans to engage with the International Cricket Council (ICC) and other boards to spread tours more evenly throughout the year. Suggestions include:

  • Introducing mandatory rest windows after every home series.
  • Limiting back-to-back overseas assignments to two tours in a six-month cycle.
  • Coordinating with franchise leagues to avoid clashes with international commitments.

“A well-structured FTP will benefit everyone – players deliver their best, fans enjoy thrilling contests, and teams can plan strategically,” said Devajit Saikia.

Impact on International and Domestic Cricket

While the review focuses on India’s schedule, the ripple effects could reshape bilateral series across the globe. Coaches believe that properly spaced fixtures will reduce injury rates and allow players to prepare meticulously for each format. For domestic cricket, organisers are open to tweaking the Ranji Trophy and Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy windows to better align with international assignments.

Player Wellness at the Forefront

Mental health experts and physiotherapists were also part of the discussions. The BCCI is exploring innovative measures such as mandatory rest breaks, monitored recovery sessions and access to specialised support staff during tours. Ensuring players are mentally refreshed is seen as critical for sustaining high-quality cricket.

Next Steps and Road Ahead

The BCCI will present its recommendations to the ICC’s FTP committee later this year. Meanwhile, national selectors and coaches will recalibrate training camps and rotation policies based on the revised calendar. Fans can look forward to a schedule that balances match excitement with player wellbeing, promising an improved on-field spectacle.

As India continues its packed international itinerary, the BCCI’s proactive stance signals a commitment to keeping its cricketing stars in peak condition. A player-friendly approach to scheduling stands to benefit the sport’s growth in India and set a precedent for boards worldwide.
