The much-anticipated one-off Test between Afghanistan and Bangladesh kicked off in Abu Dhabi on Friday, delivering plenty of sports action for cricket fans across India. Day 1 saw competitive bowling spells, gritty batting displays and an intriguing pitch that promises more excitement when play resumes.
Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and elected to field first, confident that Abu Dhabi’s late-turning pitch would favour his side’s spin arsenal. Bangladesh’s top order was immediately put to the test by a combination of flight and turn, setting the tone for a day of tactical battles.
Bangladesh’s batting line-up responded positively to the early challenge. Opener Litton Das negotiated the initial onslaught and looked comfortable against the pace of Mohammad Nabi and Noor Ahmad. However, it was skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto who emerged as the batting hero, crafting a fluent 89-run knock before a well-flighted delivery from Rashid caught his edge late in the day.
Middle-order batsman Towhid Hridoy anchored one end with a solid 45, while Mahmudul Hasan chipped in with useful lower-order contributions. Despite their efforts, Bangladesh ended Day 1 at 233 for 6, with hopes of building on this platform tomorrow.
Afghanistan’s bowling attack made full use of the pitch conditions. Rashid Khan proved why he is one of the premier spinners in world cricket, returning figures of 2 for 48. His variations of leg-spin and well-disguised googlies repeatedly threatened the stumps and kept the scoreboard ticking slowly.
Noor Ahmad supported him admirably, picking up two wickets of his own, including that of Litton Das with a sharp delivery that spun back from outside off. Left-arm spinner Zahir Khan also made an impact, tempting Bangladesh’s lower order into tentative shots and finishing with figures of 1 for 32.
The pitch in Abu Dhabi on Day 1 offered turn from the outset, especially through the afternoon session. While the surface remained true off a length, variable bounce and spin growth can be expected as the match progresses. Spinners from both sides will be keen to exploit any rough patches created by the bowlers’ follow-through areas.
When play resumes, Bangladesh will look to lose minimal wickets and give Najmul Hossain Shanto company as he eyes a historic century. Afghanistan, buoyed by their first-innings bowling performance, will aim to wrap up the Bangladeshi tail quickly and take control of the contest.
With a day of intriguing play already complete, all eyes will be on Day 2 for further match excitement, rewarding performances, and decisive moments in this unique Test encounter.
