India vs New Zealand 3rd ODI 2022: 219 – 104/1 (Match Called Off Due to Rain)

Rainfall has been a regular feature of India’s tour of New Zealand 2022. The final One Day International was scheduled on Wednesday, 30th November 2022, at Christchurch. Just like the rest of the matches, there was rain expected for the third and final ODI of the series.

To everyone’s surprise, the game started on time as the Rain-Gods were kind enough to allow uninterrupted full innings and 18 overs in the second innings. By now, the clouds could no longer hold all the moisture and decided to spoil the party as it started drizzling. New Zealand were in a very comfortable position to win the match and take the series 2-0. But persistent rainfall meant that the match was called-off. Despite New Zealand’s emphatic performance, the match ended without any result due to rainfall. New Zealand won the series 1-0.

India vs New Zealand 3rd ODI 2022 – As it Happened:

India vs New Zealand 3rd ODI 2022 Match Report

Earlier, Kane Williamson had won the toss for New Zealand and decided to bowl first under cloudy skies. There was a fair bit of green on the wicket and it seemed like a good toss to win as New Zealand decided to put India in to bat. There was some initial movement, as bowling-friendly conditions made life difficult for Indian Openers. Shikhar Dhawan and Shubman Gill had a scratchy start to the innings but they held on for the first half an hour.

Just when India started to get some momentum going, the New Zealand Captain made a bowling change and brought in Adam Milne. Milne got hit for two successive fours in his first over before dismissing Shubman Gill. He was caught in the ring for only 13 while trying to flick a ball of his pads onto the on-side.

That brought Shreyas Iyer to the crease. Shikhar and Iyer started to build a partnership but Dhawan was bowled for 28 by an excellent ball from Milne that took the inside edge before hitting Dhawan’s leg and rolling back onto the stumps. Rishabh Pant was sent in at 4 but failed to get going as Daryl Mitchell had him caught at deep square leg. India’s man-in-form Sukyakumar Yadav walked into bat at number 5. India needed SKY to fire today but he was caught at slip for 6 runs after poking at an excellent delivery from Milne who was breathing fire today. In the very next over, Lockie Ferguson dismissed Shreyas Iyer for 49 to leave India five down for 121. Washington Sundar provided some rear-guard action with his 51 from 64 balls as wickets kept tumbling at the other end. India was all out for 219 in 47.3 overs. Mitchell and Milne picked up three wickets each while Tim Southee got two.

The chase of 220 was an easy one for the Kiwis. Their openers were cautious in the first few overs but Finn Allen got the momentum going to take New Zealand to 93 in 16 overs. Allen was dismissed for a 57.

New Zealand was 104/1 in 18 overs when rain interrupted the match. Had 20 overs been bowled, New Zealand would have won the match on the D/L method as they were 50 runs ahead of the par score.

Persistent rainfall meant that the match was called off. New Zealand won the series 1 – 0.
