Shai Hope’s Unbeaten Century Guides West Indies to Six-Wicket Triumph in 2nd T20I

Match Recap: India Sets Competitive Total

The second T20 International between India and West Indies at the JSCA International Stadium in Ranchi unfolded into a thrilling contest on Friday. India, batting first, posted a challenging 181 for 6 in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Rohit Sharma anchored the innings with a fluent 88 off 54 balls, while Suryakumar Yadav chipped in with a brisk 35. Despite regular breakthroughs from the West Indies pace attack, India’s middle order provided momentum at key stages to set a formidable target for their visitors.

Hope’s Match-Winning Century

In reply, West Indies got off to a steady start before Shai Hope took charge of the chase. Playing with composure and flair, Hope compiled an unbeaten 100 off 61 deliveries, featuring 8 fours and 4 sixes. His measured approach ensured the required run rate never spiralled out of control, and he showcased an impressive range of strokes through the offside and over midwicket.

Hope’s century was complemented by a dynamic cameo from Sherfane Rutherford, who smashed 47 off just 28 balls. The pair stitched together a pivotal 108-run partnership for the second wicket, effectively neutralising India’s bowling plans. Rutherford’s explosive hitting, including three towering sixes in a single over, provided the perfect platform for Hope to settle in and steer the chase home.

Key Performances All Around

While Hope’s hundred stole the show, other players made notable contributions. Obed McCoy impressed with the new ball, claiming two important wickets to dent India’s top order. For India, leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal picked up figures of 2 for 25, and proved economical during the middle overs. However, India’s death-overs bowling lacked the usual sting, allowing the Windies duo to exploit loose deliveries and maintain the momentum.

The fielding departments on both sides were on top form. India’s skipper Rohit held a stunning boundary catch to dismiss Johnson Charles, while West Indies captain Rovman Powell took a sharp return catch to break India’s middle-order. Ultimately, it was Hope’s calm presence at the crease that sealed the game and levelled the series.

Series Status and What Lies Ahead

With this victory, West Indies levelled the three-match T20I series at 1-1, setting up an enticing finale in the decider. The third and final T20I is scheduled to take place on October 11 in Bengaluru. Both teams will look to fine-tune their combinations and strategies, with momentum swinging firmly in the visitors’ favour after Hope’s heroics.

For Indian fans, the series now hinges on the Bengaluru encounter, where home favourite Mohammed Siraj and co. will aim to bounce back. Meanwhile, West Indies will back their in-form batting duo of Hope and Rutherford to deliver once again under the lights at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Cricket enthusiasts across India can expect another high-octane clash as both sides vie for supremacy in the shortest format.
